Based on a 2010 lot shirt idea by Chuck Hoffman and designed by Jiggs, this Birds of a Feather pin features 9 colors, multiple cutouts, and a curved slider. The 1.5" pin features silver metal as the background, and is double posted. This pin is released in a numbered series of 100 and will not be re-released. This 2.0 version is a correction from the first version, in which most of the run was misprinted.

Pins in the 1-50 series will be available through Jiggs Lot, and pins 51-100 will be available from Chuck Hoffman. Pins are $20 with shipping included).

Jiggs Digs: PhanArt

Jiggs Digs will be a new feature here at the blog highlighting various things in and around the Phish community. I’d like to use the “interview format” for this feature. I feel like this gives the person or people a chance to explain things in their own words. I’d very much like this to be a monthly feature, but if time allows I may make more than one post in a month.

I thought we would start with the most obvious one: PhanArt. If you have been part of the Phish Internet community for any time at all, then you have at least heard of PhanArt. But, what or who is it exactly? What is it for?

PhanArt started as a book, which was the brainchild of long time Phish fan Pete Mason. From Pete’s website:

“PhanArt: The Art of the Fans of Phish, is a 400+ page coffee table book featuring over 1600 pieces of Phish fan created art. Included in the book are over 400 posters, more than 500 shirts, 350+ stickers, and 100′s of license plates, dozens of tattoos, articles, interviews, essays, and other creations Phish fans made from the late 1980s through 2004. This comprehensive collection is a must-have for any Phish fan. Hundreds of Phish fans and artists worked to contribute to the collection which was laid out and compiled by Author and Editor Pete Mason.”

1. What was the origin of PhanArt?

On the ride back from Coventry, I had a drive down I-91 where everyone in the car was asleep and I had a few moments to look back on the past few days and what was left behind in the Northeast Kingdom. I'm highly sentimental for even the small stuff and all the relationships and friendships I had made during Phish would surely change, provided we stayed in touch and saw each other. I didn't know the community very well, that of the artists and fans who made posters, shirts, stickers and other fun and creative things...I didn't know them very well and had just gotten into the posters at Hampton with the 'Best Poster Convention' which was fortunately held at my hotel. I didn't want to let this community's creations to slip away into oblivion. Sure, there's expressobeans.com but there was a ton of art that was going to be packed up and stored for the long term since Phish was not coming back any time soon after Coventry. So I had the idea to compile all the art, got advice from close friends and went to work getting in touch with artists in the Phish community and those who collected art, and set about making the book.

2. How much work was involved in putting the book together?

Way more than I anticipated and way more than some realize. From October 2004 until mid-2008, I was collecting art that I knew about and didn't know existed, so I had literally no idea what was out there beyond that which was made by artists who I was able to reach out to. For example, I knew Ryan Kerrigan from a poster show in Miami in 2003. I met him briefly, bought a print and remembered him when it came time to recruit him for PhanArt. So when he submitted around 40 pieces of art made over the years, that was easy, Ryan is a known artist.

Now consider a lot shirt that has no name and no one knows the creator of. I had a few of those and there were likely many hundreds of these shirts out there. Asking fans to look through their closets for shirts was the only way to go about it and that netted a great deal of contributions. I will say that a few folks made this task incredibly easier. Warren Baker has a few hundred phish shirts and prints (official and non), Natalie Gasparini contributed 100 pieces of random art, Noah Phence made a lot and collected plus Frank and Christine Cortazzo sent me a few hundred items as well. You sent in a few things very early as well, I remember wondering 'who the heck is named Jiggs?' Tracking down these collectors (or them tracking down me) led to the book being complete. By the middle of 2008, the amount of art I was looking for and that was submitted dwindled to maybe one submission a day at most. So I got to work on laying out the book using Adobe InDesign. That was a painstaking process but went by fast throughout the fall of 2008. The book was printed in January 2009 and we had the kickoff party on February 7th, 2009.

3. Will there be a second book?

Yes and No. Since the size of PhanArt made the printing very expensive and the cost has since gone up considerably for full color printing, I cant rationalize another book just like the original. Plus, the amount of time it takes to put the book together who curtail all current projects I am working on (A book on music festivals, my website, writing for Upstate Live and other music sites) just to get it done. So an idea I came up with last fall was to have a yearly book produced in e-book form every year in the fall, with a collection of art from just one year at a time presented to fans. It would keep costs low, make the compiling of the art easier and allows for a more collaborative effort in designing the book. Josh Jacobs, a graphic designer from San Diego will be helping with layout and improving the format of the book as we progress. One year at a time is the plan, so 2009 would be released later this year, 2010 in the fall of 2013, and so on. this allows for all the art from those years to be collected without missing out on any art.

I'm open to printing some version of PhanArt in the future, but I'm not committed to another PhanArt book in print in the near future.

4. What is the most common fan created theme/art/item that you have seen?

Stickers. Over 400 of them are in the book because they are cheap and easy to design - you just need a catchphrase, lyric or word and you're set. They're a cheap and easy way to fun tour if you are serious about it. Woo-Hoo guy used to tour on his Woo-Hoo stickers alone! Shirts though are also common, and will continue to be as more fans get ideas for designs, get availability to silkscreens and make shirts that fans love.

5. Is the Phish organization aware of your efforts?

Very much so. When I started the book, I contacted Kevin Shapiro and told him what I was proposing to do. We talked and he suggested that before going any further, I retain legal counsel. This led to a meeting in Burlington with Kevin, Beth and Julia. We had a good conversation about the art, which was in a grey area because fan made art was not authorized by the band, but rather tolerated as long as the art wasn't infringing on the Phish copyrights. They were somewhat receptive to the idea but from their point of view, I was just a fan with an idea. Showing a finished product was more important. My lawyer and Kevin worked out the details after that first meeting and we brought the first draft to them in February 2008 so we could take out the art that was made by Phish that I was otherwise unaware of (this book had to be 100% fan made art, nothing official) and to go over the finer points of publishing a book related to Phish. I sent the band copies, as well as copies for Kevin, Beth and Julia, but have yet to get feedback from the band. One day....

6. What are some of the challenges of running the PhanArt website?

The challenges at first were making sure there was fresh content for the site, since this was a first of its kind in the Phish community. Getting regular contributions, learning code, developing the layout of the site with my brother, all these things were great challenges at first. After some time, things have become quite manageable with the site. Artists who regularly appear on the site send in the info needed (see how to submit your stuff here) and that leads to greater ease in getting things up on the site. 2011 was by far the busiest year for PhanArt but the least challenging and stressful. Word has spread and the response to the site and the art has been tremendous.

7. If you could change anything about the community, what would it be?

I'd like to see less infringing art. I approached the topic recently after much discussion with artists and friends (Smart Art in the Phish Community). Creativity will flow on its own, but fans, especially those who are newer to the scene need to be aware of the boundaries we have (mostly) respected and need to continue respecting in order for the Phish art community to continue thriving.

8. What’s the most unusual/interesting/memorable interaction you have had as a result of PhanArt?

There are so many memories I have as a result of the book. I've met a ton of fans and had great friendships formed as a result. The most memorable ones are when I'm on the lot or at a show and someone recognizes me and thanks me for the book, website and helping to raise money for Mockingbird. Those are the most memorable for me.

9. Have you ever had a famous or semi-famous contributor?

Well the book has Kurt Vonnegut's piece 'Hook Line and Sinker', an intro from Richard Gehr, and art from some of the bigger artists in the Phish community - AJ Masthay, Ryan Kerrigan and TRiPP. I definitely consider them to be famous in their own right, beyond the Phish community as well as within.

10. What keeps you going?

Lately, yerba mate and motivation to finish my book on music festivals by late 2013. I truly enjoy all the art the Phish community has to offer and love seeing the donations made to Mockingbird as a result. Continuing to improve the website, keep fans aware of the great art being made and encourage the development of art in the Phish community all keep me moving; it feels good doing all this.

The Time Has Come for Changes

2011 was a great year for me, but not without it's ups and downs. It was a year of great shows, great meet-ups and what seemed like endless possibilities. It was a year that allowed me to donate several hundred dollars to a few different organizations, and realize several designs that were waiting to be made. I had collaborations on stickers, pins, and posters and have learned many things along the way.

As I make plans for 2012, I realize that I need to move forward with my ideas. I will be making a move away from logo inspired parody art to creating more original pieces. What is listed in the Jiggs Lot Store will be the last of those types of designs I will produce, save for a few promised exceptions like a re-run of the Reba Alliance and Twist shirts. This is not to say I will never do that type of art again, but I think that the increase of folks getting into making "lot art" has saturated the market. There are plans for a few of these types of projects, and then I would like to move away from it completely.

I am making plans for my first solo poster, several pins, and a few designs that could eventually become shirts. I also hope to have a regular monthly blog feature coming soon as well. The NYE shows were an unexpected wonderful way to reconnect with my Phish family. I hope to make those following my work proud with some new ideas, as well as expanding my donations this year to include the Waterwheel Foundation.

Certified Fail

It's no secret that I tweak a bit when I am expecting mail, packages, or tickets. (Shirts and pins? Fuggetaboutit...I'm a wreck.) And, most of the time, things work out exactly as they are supposed to. The rest of the time things happen like they did today. Since my "I got shut out of lottery" story is extremely similar to everyone else's, I will skip forward to getting my ticket mailed to me by a really cool, super-awesome person who saw fit to sell me my NYE for face.

So the ticket arrived in her mailbox. She even took a picture and emailed it to me. See? You're in! Sweet. Tracking numbers were given for certified mail, she dropped the ticket off at the Post Office, and the wait was on. While we are waiting, here's a little information about certified mail:

After a few days I tracked the ticket and it said it was going to arrive today! (A Festivus Miracle!) The mail truck made it's way slowly up my street. I make eye contact with the mail carrier, as she drops off the mail. I wave and head out there. Wait...the truck keeps going. OK. I have been here before. The posters arrived 2 days later than the delivery confirmation predicted, too. This is the Holidays. What obviously happened is the ticket never made it out of the Post Office, right?

These mailboxes also do not have tickets in them.

Well, it was 3:30pm, so all I had to do was drive down to the Post Office and give them my address, and the tracking. I could sign for it there. Only, the Post Office didn't have it. On the off chance that my mail carrier just missed it and left it there, they looked again. No letter. No ticket. Keep in mind that there's a scan this morning that said "Arrived at Unit" 8:32am. So, somewhere in between getting there and getting to the truck it vanished. All of this was based on the logic of paying for the ticket to arrive via Certified Mail.

New plan: Come back at right before 5pm when they close and see if it maybe it was on the truck.

So, I drive back to the Post Office this evening at about 4:45pm and my carrier was back. They attempted to find the letter once again. This time there were a few more people that got involved. I was eerily calm, but visibly worried. A woman had just had it out another clerk because she wasn't getting her mail (I secretly wondered if she lived on my street). Wait calmly. It was here. Nothing to worry about. Only it wasn't there. The carrier came out and joined the conversation at that point. After a call to my house and being reassured that I wasn't crazy, she suggested maybe it ended up in another mailbox. All I can manage to ask during the whole thing was "So, what's my next step?".

With zero recourse, and the carrier's manifest showing the ticket signed for, I was out a ticket and.......Wait....wait, wait, wait...I stared right at the manifest in her hand. As they all chattered away, it hit me. I never signed for anything and there was a signature...and she knew it. So, right in front of me, the carrier got permission to go back out...basically she followed me back to my street and proceeded to check every mailbox on the road leading up to mine.

When she pulled up to the house, she said it was in the mailbox next door to mine. As I type this I am still not sure where it actually was, but all that matters now is that it's here. I guess what I am saying is that if Jonathan Frakes shows up at Madison Square Garden on NYE with a trombone I will be neither surprised nor upset.

Holiday Blog Auction for Waterwheel

I have one zippered Ghost hoodie left, and I would like to auction it off for the Waterwheel Foundation to benefit Vermont in their flood recovery efforts. The garment is a Gildan 9.3 oz., 50% cotton/50% polyester preshrunk fleece full zip hooded sweatshirt (YKK metal zipper). The color is sport grey, and the size is XL. At this moment, there are only 4 made, with plans for only a few more. You would own a very limited edition sweatshirt.

Zippered Ghost Hoodies

We won't be printing a big run of Ghosts next year. In fact, the design may be retired for quite a while. Since I wanted to go out with a bang, I'd like to introduce a short run of zippered Ghost hoodies. I normally don't use zippered hoodies, as it can be difficult to get a good print to split up across the front, and there's the challenge of creating a pocket sized print for the front.

So I created a special front print of the Ghost, and reworked the text. There will only be three of these available. Two are up for sale here, and the third will be auctioned here at the blog to benefit the Waterwheel Foundation.

If there are any reprints of this, they will not be publicly available, so this is your chance!

The garments are Gildan 9.3 oz., 50% cotton/50% polyester preshrunk fleece full zip hooded sweatshirts. Not too heavy, not too light. The sizes are XL and XXL.

I have set the shipping charge to 10.50, the exact cost of a Medium Priority Box, so that these will ship Priority on Monday and arrive before Christmas. (more pictures below!) The shipping charge includes delivery confirmation.

The NYE 2011 Cuckoo Pin

We are very happy to introduce the NYE 2011 Cuckoo Pin. These LE pins feature the cuckoo clock from the NYE poster. The run is limited to 100 pieces. The 2" high pin features 8 colors on soft enamel, allowing the details to pop out. The clock face has the numbers 28,29,30 and 31 in roman numerals, and the years 2011, and 2012 appear above the clock face. Also, the clock-work band on the little stage is playing some very familiar instruments. they are also numbered 1-100.

Jiggs Lot will only have less than half of this run available for sale online. Phro will have the rest in Denver and in NYC.

Introducing the limited edition Maze Slider. Inspired from the Maze/Pac Man themed shirts I have printed in the past, the design has been re-imagined for a pin. Update: I was contacted by a sticker maker that intended on making this into a pin. I have agreed to send that group a large amount of these pins to sell or give away, and these, as well as any variation on the Maze/PacMan theme will be discontinued. It is never my intention to take someone else's idea, and in the past there have been ideas that were similar to others. These vendors feel that the design was taken directly from them. There will be one last minute pre-order for 2011. Starting today, and running through this Sunday, December 4th, the Ghost shirt is being re-run. This is a 3 color front, 1 color back design on ice grey for the short sleeve mens, and sport grey for the other sizes. The back of the shirt reads "I'd Call Him Instead"

Short Sleeves are 100% cotton in Ice Grey (style 2000). Long sleeves (2400), and ladies (64000L) are a 90/10 cotton and in Sport Grey. The hoodies (18500) are a 50/50 blend and in Sport Grey.

The orders will only be open until December 4th at 12 noon EST, then the design goes back on the shelf. Only what is ordered will be printed. Orders begin shipping roughly 10 days after the pre-order ends.

Jiggs / Phro NYE Poster

In collaboration with Phro at Taboot Art, I am pleased to announce my first foray into Phish fan posters. Based on a solid concept from my good friend Phro, I created this poster around his cuckoo clock theme. This one had a great deal of back and forth until we hammered out the final image. I can easily say this is the most work I have put into a design before. The final image ended up turning out great.

The poster will be a 10 x 18 size, and at the time of this pre-order post, should be at least 8 colors (the colors represented here will be as close as possible, but as with any printing process, there will be some room for adjustment). The design will be screen printed on 100 stock water color paper. The posters will be shipped via a Uline poster tube, wrapped in artists paper, and will go out Priority Mail.

There will only be 200 of this run.

Coming Up...

There's a few things happening over here at Jiggs Lot, so I figured I'd make a post to highlight some of the things that are coming up.

First, I have taken some advice from some of my fellow pin artists and created a weebley site to organize all of the various merch I have. Instead of keeping things in the Odds and Ends page, all shirts, stickers, pins, and posters (more on that in a minute) can be found in one place. This blog will stay, and continue to be the main place where I will introduce new items, but the Jiggs Lot Store will be the place to go to fill up your cart, so to speak. I will also be adding the photos you are sending in to be part of the Gallery page.

Speaking of pins, I have a new pin coming out sometime during the first week of December. This will be my last pin design of 2011. The new pin will again feature a past shirt design, but this time it's been slightly re-designed for a pin. As with other pins, this will be a limited edition of 100, stamped and numbered. That's all I'll say for now.

Next, the My Friend shirt pre-order is quickly drawing to a close. If you have ordered anything from me before, you know that the printing runs are always limited edition, so these will not be available when this run ends. I sometimes end up with extras, but if you are planning these for a gift, get your order in before this Sunday to ensure you get the size and style you want.

And finally, and possibly my most exciting news...I have completed a NYE poster design in collaboration with Phro at Taboot Art. This will be unlike anything I have done, and I am very excited to see this printed. The poster will debut here on the blog on Black Friday, for a special 5 day pre-order at a discounted price. My Friend Shirt Re-Print (pre-order)

Once again...ask, and ye shall receive. I have gotten a lot of recent requests to re-run this one, so the time has come. Originally run in Nov/Dec of 2010, these are up again for a pre-order. This pre-order will run until Nov. 27th, and the shirts will ship out roughly 10 days after that. Please understand this is a pre-order situation, and your shirt will not ship out until after the pre-order closes.

Modeled after the head shop metal shirts of the 80's and 90's, these My Friend shirts feature a three color front, and a one color back. The shirts will be black Gildan 100% cotton. This creation of Jiggs and PhanArt started out as a sticker, then a pin. Now the iconic YEMSG design is available on shirts, both short and long sleeve as well as Hoodies for the fall. This design was inspired by the YEM from 12/4/09 and is available for pre-order. ALL pre-orders will receive free shipping, a YEMSG sticker and a NYEMSG 2011-12 sticker with each purchase.

Originally sold on the lot during the Hampton 2009 run, the first version of this shirt was a 2 color print on white. I have had a lot of folks ask about these over the last couple of years. I never got the chance to get back around to them...until now. I am extremely pleased to announce another run of Tube shirts.

I am changing it up a little bit on this one...the new run will feature a 3 color print on Gildan indigo blue garments (Ladies sizes will substitute sky blue). Pin Set Auction For Waterwheel

I am putting up a 3 pin set for auction for the Waterwheel Foundation in order to make a contribution to Vermont Flood relief. The difference, is that I won't go through eBay, or other sites. We will do the bidding right in the comments section. Featured are the 3 pins I have made up to this point, The Reba Alliance (currently sold out), the Whalecaller, and the Ghost pin.

The opening bid will be 10 dollars. At 10 dollars a pin, the set is easily worth $30 dollars. Bidding ends when the show begins on Wednesday. The winner should PayPal the winning bid to me, and send me and email with their name and address so that I can mail the pins out. I will transfer the funds directly to Waterwheel, so there are no eBay fees. If for some reason the winning bidder does not respond, then the next highest bid wins.

Harpua Stickers

This sticker was born out of a Twitter exchange with @ChinaKatSunflwr. The original suggestion was "Your Dog Doesn't Like Phish Tour". It speaks to the concern a lot of us have for dogs, and specifically, dogs who are not well cared for who are forced into a camper or car during the show. Since I don't use Phish, or it's likenesses on my work, this seemed to be a great way to say it. Much like the Kuroda sticker, this is a tongue-in-cheek sticker highlighting the dog we really want to see.

The stickers are 5.5 x 1.5, and are screen-printed vinyl. They are outdoor rated for 3 years. Stickers are 2 for $1 or 5 for $2. Get em HERE!

These shots were found on the "columbusunderground forum" by spocksbrain on PT. They are on the Flicker photo stream of user cdubya1971 and were taken on July 2nd, 2011.

From the photographer: "Polaris Amphitheater, or Germain as it was called when it closed in 2007, is now just in decay and ruin. Following the 2007 concert season the facility and property were auctioned for sale but received no bids from buyers. Seats have been uprooted and there is quite a level of untouched vandalism and graffiti." See the rest of the photos here.

Billy Ray Cyrus played the first concert at Germain Amphitheater in 1994. Toby Keith played the final show on September 16, 2007. The last Phish shows took place there July 14th and 15th in 2000.

Peace Winds America joins the Consul General and Prime Minister in expressing our deepest gratitude to you—all who have supported the people of Japan through funding for relief and recovery as well as through prayers and heartfelt concern. Your generous response has been overwhelming and we thank you.

Since the March 11 earthquake/tsunami, Peace Winds America and our sister organization, Peace Winds Japan, have provided relief to the northeastern area devastated by the tsunami. We continue to offer relief to survivors in shelters – from food and nutrition to entertainment and haircuts. We are delivering household supplies – including blankets, sheets, cooking utensils, and cutlery – to an estimated 11,000 families in temporary homes. We are targeting the elderly to ensure that they are not forgotten and that their wisdom and experiences are tapped. The End of Leg 1 - 2011

2012 Charger

Setting out without our son this time, we decided to do the last three shows of the Southern Run as our shows this year. Unless there's some kind of miracle, these would be the only shows we would catch until next year. After securing another Undercover-Look-Alike rental, our group of three set out Friday morning for Charlotte. It was nice, again, watching folks change lanes when we were in the left lane...just in case. We headed for our friends' house, then the lot. Like 2010, there was little hassle, and a great mellow attitude in the lot. We were in lot B near the VIP lot and were able to hear the Dog Log soundcheck fairly clearly. I'm hoping that's not as close as I will get to hearing one. We had a lot of fun with our friends, new and old, and a few I was getting to meet for the first time.

Vending on Friday

We planned on driving right through after the shows, and though we missed some after show shenanigans, this proved to be a good strategy for us. I had been listening to the streams and had caught what I was able to of the Alpharetta simulcast, but I was still really happy with the sound and with the energy on Friday night. And a rare Mike's Song opener doesn't hurt either. The first set highlight was definitely the Forbin's / Mockingbird, though like many others, I kinda miss the stories full on stories.

That being said, every time I catch a show in Charlotte I am usually ( as I said to a friend later that weekend ) put back in my place as a Phish fan.

Second set would have been enough to talk about with the Rock and Roll > Ghost > Free that featured some fantastic jamming. But, after a solid Reba, I was treated to my first Icculus, and a fun one at that featuring some great banter about a local musician ( David Mayfield) being Icculus and how we needed to read... well, you know. The tight YEM was another highlight for me.

After the show, we headed for the car for a beverage or two, and I donned a bathrobe for laughs. As I stood in front of some friends, a firework shell went sideways and shot towards all of us. The shell hit my bathrobe, saving my leg from burns, and then bounced harmlessly under a car and went out. The jury is still out, but we're pretty sure the robe saved us.

We arrived in the middle of the night in Raleigh and crashed. After some coffee and pre-gaming the next afternoon, we headed out for some barbecue. We hit the lot at about 4:30 and parked back near shakedown. In the past I can remember Raleigh as being extremely strict and at times downright unpleasant before the show. These last two years have been great. There was still a lot of undercover activity, but they didn't really want anything to do with us...just the people selling beer. More good times with friends, and I got to meet a few more PT and Twitter folks.

Raleigh was a really fun lot, though it seemed a lot hotter than last year. It looked like we were going to get hit with storms like Alpharetta did, but after some decent vending, and meeting some great folks, we packed up in light drizzle, and it seemed to pass us over. Raleigh only held one first for me and that was Been Caught Stealing. It was a lot of fun to hear. However, as a whole, it was still another solid show. Solid, but different from the night before. I really began to notice Kuroda's new additions to the lighting rig. The three additional round panels in the back a well as the increased details projected onto the big screens added a layer of depth to the stage I really enjoyed.

"Can you have all these people sit down?"

During the first set, we witnessed an entertaining show within a show, as the folks in the box seat directly in front of us tried to have fun. The couple was asking the management if there was anything that could be done about the pot smoke, and at one point asked if the people in the box seat in front of them if they would please sit down so they could see the show. Poor folks didn't really look like they were having any fun at all.

Scattered, Smothered, Covered

This time we hung out for a little bit longer after the show. Having a prime location, there was no rush to get out and sit in traffic. We picked up another passenger and it was my turn to drive. The mission at hand was to find food. After a short bit of driving what happened next was a huge surprise. We stumbled upon a brand new, completely empty, super clean Waffle House. This was unheard of. They were literally waiting to help us. Trip highlight? Maybe. Awesome? Yes.

We arrived in Portsmouth at about 4am and wound down to finally crash about 5am. Once we had a few hours of sleep, we set out again for food. After getting rained on trying to get a table at the Beir Garden (which was kind of fun) we wandered down and had a decent meal at Roger Brown's. The service was a bit overwhelmed, but the food was good.

Then, we headed to find the rest of our friends and get ready for the show. We lucked out and got in the same parking garage as everyone else. I wasn't really set on vending this time, but I had a few shirts with me. I felt like relaxing. We hung out near the harbor and watched the boats. Once it got closer to showtime, we headed to the venue and then got rid of our extra for face. Yes, for face.

It really made a fan happy, which prompted us to be asked by another passing couple "Wow, did you just sell that for face??" Yes we did. It's hard to believe that practice is rare.

So many folks I knew were there, and that will be the main reason I will hold this show as one of my favorites. Besides the special Father's Day narration in the Harpua opener...besides a first set new Springsteen Cover honoring the late Clarence Clemmons...nevermind probably the best Crosseyed and Sand I have ever witnessed...the reason I will hold this as one of my favorite shows is that at one point on the back corner of the lawn, I turned and realized I knew almost everyone there. So many great friends I have met through this crazy circus, and they were all there with me. It couldn't have been a better time.

We then headed off for the boat party.

What Do You See?

A man and a woman are sitting in a field staring up at the sky. They are watching passing clouds and trying to see what shapes they look like. This goes on peacefully for a while. They mostly notice simple shapes...cats, dogs, flowers...until the shapes start becoming more difficult to associate with something recognizable. As the clouds became unfamiliar and more difficult to categorize, the couple began coming up with much different perceptions of what they saw. One would experience joy and elation at finding a Dragon, while the other would see pure disappointment that it was simply a Log.

As the afternoon wore on, the couple began to argue. "If you can't see what I see, then you must have no imagination at all!" one was heard saying. "It's as plain as day!" the other would respond, "...everyone on the planet would agree with me, that cloud looks like nothing!" This continued on until before right the sun began to set.

What do you see?

They had gotten themselves so worked up about who was more experienced in cloud watching, and what they were actually seeing that they missed what both would have agreed was the most beautiful sunset of their lives.

Like clouds, Phish's music can be perceived in so many different ways, by so many different types of people. There's no one way to enjoy them, and no one, despite what they would like you to believe, is any more experienced at enjoying the music than anyone else. There are many who are more knowledgeable about titles and statistics, but no one can tell you whether or not you can still have fun.

Jiggs Pick 5 Game

So it'll be time for another rendition of my Pick 5 game. No rules, or stat knowledge needed. I have reposted the "rules" below. On twitter, I will be using the hashtag #JiggsPick5 for mine.

Here's how it works: Pick any 5 songs you think the band will play that night. That's it...any 5. The beauty of this game is that two people can have entirely different lists, and still win. For that reason, a bonus song is picked, with the description being much more general like "New Cover Song:". Of course, it means that if they play a new original song, it doesn't count...and so on. The person with the most songs called in the show wins.

The traditional prize for the victor is usually hashbrowns, but you can substitute your own loot.Oh, one more thing...we only play the game for shows we are going to.

Well that time is finally here! I really can't wait. Waiting, and watching the tour unfold via social networking, and streams has primed me and I am beyond ready to hit the last three shows of the tour.

I will be tweeting from the road, and as much as my limited technology allows, from the shows. Be ready for mediocre to terrible camera pics, and sporadic tweeting. I am not one of those with a smart phone (or even a reasonably attractive phone) so my tweets will all be one way, and I won't be able to respond to anyone. It's probably best that I not have access to that kind of electronic device anyway. I'll put up the good pictures and video after the run is over.

I will have a few items with me, mainly the Reba pins and the rest of the ASIHTOS shirts, as well as a few other things. So, those links are going to be turned off when I am on the road, and I will put back up what's left. See you in Charlotte!

So... many of you have noticed by now that I have introduced the Twist shirt. I was inspired last minute and didn't plan on having any with me in the lot this year. I will also be introducing another brand new pre-order shirt coming this Monday that will be Plinko themed. This will also be a pre-order only situation, as I will probably do with all my shirts from here on out. This method allows me to keep making small batches.

I will also be re-running some of the older, more popular shirts by pre-order this summer. These will drop on Mondays yet to be determined. Each one, like these, will last for one week, and then be pulled. If you missed your chance to get one of last years shirts, check the blog or twitter for updates.

There is also a good chance I will be headed to Superball....yet another last minute decision. I may - or may not - have any of these shirts with me. So, if you see something you want, it would be best to grab it during the pre-order.

Twist Shirts

Getting on the Tilt - a - Whirl was always hit or miss with me. I can remember enjoying the hell out of it at the fair, and other times there may have been a little too much funnel cake involved. Inspired by the county fair ride, these Twist -a- Round shirts feature a 3 color front/3 color back design. The colors on the example are approximate. The spinning Tilt -a- Whirl car will be smaller and centered between the shoulder blades on the back of the shirt. The text under the car reads simply "Woo!". The design is printed on light blue. Replacement garment colors will be selected for non-traditional sizes. Please no custom colors and no special orders.

I'm changing up the men's shirts and going with a Gildan Heavy (5000) instead of Ultra. The shirt weight is about a half an ounce lighter than what I normally use (5.3), so a nice lighter color, lighter weight summer shirt. The ladies shirts will be Bella (64000L). The long sleeves will be the usual Gildans (2400) that I use. You can Google any of these styles along with "Gildan" to look up sizing charts.

This is a pre-order. I am only ordering enough to cover these orders, and maybe a handful more. These will not be in the lot this summer (unless you wear it to leg 2 shows, of course!). Orders will be open until Sunday, June 12th at noon EST. After that it will take about 10 days for me to get the shirts, and for them to start mailing out to you. That will put them arriving to you sometimes at the end of June. Please check the about page before ordering.

I wanted to bring to your attention a very grassroots project to aid the victims of the recent tornado destruction in Alabama. Our friend letwendyin from the Reality Tour board has organized the Artists for Alabama Tornado Relief Facebook page.

This is a unique auction style fan page. Artists post what they are offering, and folks post their bids in the comments section below the photo. The bidding ends on May 17th. The donated funds will be used to fill a van with relief supplies, and personally driven down by the organizers.

Reba Alliance Pins!

For the last couple of years I have seen an increase in both pin production and demand. I have been asked many times to re-create my designs in pin form. The Reba Alliance seemed the most obvious one to start with.

Peace Winds ASIHTOS donation

There were 24 pieces this time for the 2nd round of ASIHTOS shirts... going as far out as the UK. I went ahead and took the liberty of rounding up the donation amount to an even 200.00. It works out to over 8 dollars per garment this time. The donation to Peace Winds was made a few minutes ago.

For those still awaiting their shirts, I began shipping them out yesterday. I am converting my shipping method to use PayPal. So, I am sending out a few at a time to get used to the labeling system. By Thursday of next week, all shirts (including the ones headed to Japan) will be shipped out.

Ocean Shirts for Japan (Round 2)

Donation Update from ASIHTOS shirts

I shipped out over 50 packages over the last 2 days to various parts of the world, including Japan and the UK. The total number of garments was around 65. I am not certain of the number due to a few last minute orders that I need to take care of. After a couple hundred in shipping, I was able to gather together $400 for a donation to the American Red Cross. That works out to around 6 dollars per garment. Everything else went towards shipping and packaging. Not bad for a bunch of Phish heads! The donation has been made this afternoon. The following message is generated when you make a donation...so I thought it fitting to post here.

It's pretty safe to say that Gordon is throwing down this tour. The band is in a great place compared to the last time I saw them in Asheville. Besides having no opening band this time, the energy level was also way higher. You'll get no comparison from me to other band members or side projects, but if you have the chance to see Mike this tour...do not pass it up.

Two sets gave us a lot more choices for songs. It was nice to hear a meatier Spiral and a stellar Andelman's Yard make a return. Mike ended the first set with a couple newer songs from an upcoming album, saying "We never play the setlist anyway...it's irrelevant." Some of my favorite highlights included the cover songs. 15 Steps and Time (The Revalator) were both incredible versions. During the Gillian Welch tune I could actually feel the floor of the Orange Peel shaking. The Phish "cover songs" were also a great treat. The way the band tackles Mound is something to behold.

What is it about Asheville that has Mike (and also Trey) saying they love our town so much? Maybe it was the chocolate. Thankfully I didn't have to drive very far to catch this band, but I easily would have.

Japan Donation Update

I feel the need to explain my decision to go with the Red Cross when the time comes to donate the funds raised from the ASIHTOS shirts. Many have expressed reservations because of previous experiences with the Red Cross. The only thing that would be an ideal solution is personally handing a blanket and a bottled water to a cold thirsty Japanese citizen. None of us here can do that.

A lot has changed with the Red Cross in the last decade. Understandably, many will still have issues with that as a donation destination. However, the Japanese Red Cross Society has posted the following message on it's website

If you want to donate money to the affected population of earthquake and tsunami, please contact your national Red Cross/Crescent society, which may have already launched fundraising campaign within your country.

This message, coupled with the fact that the American Red Cross has a donation system allowing you to request your donation be used to specifically help Japan is what I used to reach my decision. I know this isn't going to make everyone happy, and for that I am sorry.

The ARC site also goes on to say this "....On those rare occasions when donations exceed American Red Cross expenses for a specific disaster, contributions are used to prepare for and serve victims of other disasters." This sentiment is echoed by the GiveWell blog, as it states "If you do give, your gift will probably be used (a) by the charity you give it to, for activities in a different country; (b) for non-disaster-relief-and-recovery efforts in Japan."

Since Japan has requested assistance from the American Red Cross, some Red Cross funds will be used immediately, but there's a possibility that these funds will be used for future recovery efforts in Japan. That is likely where your shirt dollars will be going.

I wanted to be absolutely clear on that, so that no one got the wrong impression. I am fine with that, as Japan has a very long road ahead of it. Recovering from this will be no easy task. If these dollars go to help someone 3 or 4 months out rather than tomorrow, it doesn't matter to me. My efforts here, in the big scheme of things are minimal. The idea behind this project is that I felt like I should do something....rather than nothing.

Ocean Shirts For Japan

I have had this design for quite some time. I have been tweaking it and changing it for about 2 years, trying to get it the way I like it. Originally I had planned on doing it over the summer (2011) in hopes the song would become more of a staple, but it's not that well known of a beer brand. Considering what happened in Japan, I thought it would be a good thing to do a run of this design specifically to benefit relief efforts there.

I will account for all shirt costs to produce these, then donate the rest to (at this point) the American Red Cross. In the rare event that donations exceed costs for the relief efforts there, some funds would be redistributed to domestic issues (per the Red Cross website). I am open to changing the destination of the funds if someone can provide me with good information on where else to donate.

The shirt color is Chestnut to represent the bottle color. Chocolate will be used for the long sleeves and hoodies. Grey will be used to substitute the tall sizes. The print is white, red, and black and features the kanji symbol meaning 'ocean' or 'sea'. The image will be roughly 7 inches across the front. The design is based off of the Asahi beer brand (which, I am told, is the most popular beer in Japan), and features the acronym for the song in the main text. As well as a hopeful message of "Shining Light in Darkness Deep" where the brewery information would normally be. For short sleeves, I will be using Gildan 100% cotton shirts, long sleeves will be my standard Gildan 2400. The only difference is the ladies shirts will be style 64000L. The hoody is style 18500 (7.5 oz.). This is a pre-order only. Pre-order will be open until March 20th. No more orders will be accepted after that point. No Special Orders. I am expecting about a 10 day turn around from the time that the pre-order closes. I am only accepting PayPal. I am unable to keep up with all the checks and MO's and addresses otherwise. I apologize for the inconvenience.

Trey in Columbus

I'm so glad I made the decision to drive up to Ohio for this show. As the plans grew, the invitations were responded to, and the van was rented, I realized this was the exact brand of fun I could not miss out on.

So we drove.

Clocking in at just about a 8.5 hour trip, we cruised into Columbus on Friday night to begin the pre-game festivities. (On that note, please remind me this summer that I am not a spring chicken.) We can't begin to thank the folks at the Mound House enough for their awesome hospitality and great food. Thanks also to the friends I may not have officially "met" while there. It was awesome to finally get to hang out with you guys.

Please drink responsibly. Would you like to supersize that?

The van got there in enough time to hang out for a bit at the A&R Bar. We began referring to the super-sized drink cups they offered as the "JumboTronz". (Yours truly stuck with the regular size) We were surprised to learn that we could just walk in next door to the venue with the drinks we just purchased. Cool idea. I wish other bars nearby to venues would follow this practice. I am discovering that I am quite terrible at meet-ups, so I missed the Tweet-up. And, since my phone is a slab of marble and a chisel, I can't see the actual Twitter Feed. One day I will upgrade.

The room itself was painted matte black and looked like a black-box theatre. Once inside, we set ourselves up right near Ray side towards the front. The sound was very good once we moved a little closer towards the center, but all in all was mixed very well, and we stayed near Rays rig. I must mention that the talking during the acoustic set was still very present, though while being there I didn't seem to be distracted by it quite as much as I thought. As I tweeted that night, it was like hanging out at a giant campfire where everyone knew the words. I very much enjoyed this portion of the show. The Hood was a big surprise and worked really well as a solo acoustic song, especially with everyone singing along. Instead of ending with a Caymen, the first set just kept going. Hearing Burn that Bridge and Ocelot with horns was a major highlight for me.

Second set hit the ground running with Jibboo. This was another highlight for me. It was great to see the interplay between Trey and Ray. Ray's levels were so perfectly in the pocket, small subtle little note changes drove this jam. The video is well worth checking out.

Besides the extremely solid standards (Burlap deserves a mention here), we were treated to the second Simple Twist Up Dave on the tour thus far. I have been waiting almost 10 years to hear this one, and Trey did not disappoint. The horn lines, Tony, Trey's layering...it was a sweet reward.

It's probably still going to take a little bit of time to go through the rest of the videos I collected. Keep checking back on my YouTube channel for more complete songs from the 2/26/11 TAB performance. Thanks again to everyone who made our trip possible.

Wait...There's a Band?

It never ceases to amaze me when I get to watch the videos after a show. I may have touched on this a few times in previous posts, but it continues to make my day discovering the various videos from different angles that get posted. YEMblog, among others, is a great source for aggregating all the material in one place.

One of the things I am starting to notice more and more is that there's an unbelievable amount of chatter going on during shows. For clarity, I am not talking about statements or questions like "What song is this?..." or, "...wow, look what he's doing to that Martin...". I am referring to full on family reunion meet-ups with dialog catching up on every piece of information not discussed since they saw each other last.

Take a listen to this Meatstick. After Trey recognizes the group requesting the song, and aside from the awesome singalong...in the background is a large din of conversation that just keeps going...and going...

This one is a little worse, in my opinion. Full on conversations going, and "Woo!" thrown in every now and then when recognizable parts of the song come around. And ironically, screaming during the most quiet parts.

Are you kidding?....listen to the break down arrangement again. It's really cool! I'm not saying keep your mouth shut for every song, but it gets a little ridiculous when you ask someone to please keep it down so you can actually hear the music. And before you say "Well, he was playing acoustic, so you could hear the talking more..." I would answer, "Well, he's playing the acoustic, so you should be talking less."

A Little Bit of Trey

In celebration of seeing the band this weekend, I thought I'd pick out a few of my favorite Trey Band songs and get siked up for the weekend. Every time I hear this one I think of the 3 piece covering it. It would be really nice to hear this one from the current band and get Ray's take on it.

Internet Friends and the State of Ohio

A side benefit of being a member of one or two message boards and Twitter is meeting people that you've previously only conversed with online. Of course, this leads to meet-ups, tweet-ups and big-ups...many of the folks that I initially met online are now long term friends in real life. Many remain acquaintances, and those part time family members that somehow you keep seeing every summer.

This winter, instead of a Trey show right in my backyard, I decided to make the trip to see some kangs...er...friends, in Ohio. I love the side projects as much as Phish, especially Classic TAB. I have never made an 8 hour drive to see a side project yet, but somehow, the allure of the meet-up and a throw-down makes it a little sweeter. It doesn't hurt that the band is firing on all cylinders, either.

I will hopefully be tweeting from the show and capturing some HD video to post later. I may or may not make the Tweet-up, but I will try...See you guys there!

Tweep Merch

So, the Tweep Merch has officially arrived. I thought I'd give you a little preview before these arrived to you in the mail. The turquoise turned out really sharp, and the text looks as perfect as I have ever seen it, neatly tucked in between the shoulder blades. Good job on selecting the colors and design, guys!

I will not be handling any further merchandise for anyone, so please...no emails, I will delete them unless they come from Phish :).

A Little Break (part 2)

Ok, so it's like this. The random requests are getting more frequent, and more demanding. For whatever reason if you didn't get a shirt in the pre-order, there will be no favoritism. I am not "saving" any shirts for anyone. In a day or so I will put up links to whatever Ghost shirts remain.

I keep the pre-orders open for a week, and run it through Twitter and Facebook. When I post about this on Phish message boards, I get modded, banned, or accused of spamming, so I try to let folks know about them through my own channels.

What started as something fun for me is getting less and less so. There may be one or two exceptions in the future, but for now I am definitely done with mailing shirts out.

Ghost Pre-Order Launched

As promised I have launched the pre-order page for the Ghost shirts This pre-order ends on January 16th, so get in while you can! This pre-order will for the first time ever offer the Ghost design in a ladies cut shirt and a 50/50 blend Hoodie.

The Results Are In...

182 people voted, and the results surprised me. The Ghost shirt was double digits ahead of every other shirt I've made(45.5%). I guess I underestimated it's popularity! At a respectable distant second place was the Maze/Pac-Man shirt (27.5%).

As promised I will begin the pre-order for the Ghost shirts by Monday, if not sooner. Pre-order will run through the week, and end, so that a new pre-order can start for the next run of the Maze shirt.

My Friend Shirts - Pre Order

When my printer and friend contacted me about doing an Iron Maiden themed Phish shirt I wasn't sure it would work. I couldn't think of a song that would fit the theme until I remembered the Killers album art. Giving Eddie a knife seemed the perfect way to set it off.

Modeled after the head shop metal shirts of the 80's and 90's, these My Friend shirts feature a three color front, and a one color back printed on Gildan 100% cotton black. (Hoodies are a 50/50 blend)

Pre-Order is open until December 5th. Since this is a Pre-Order, the shirts will not begin shipping until around the 15th. This should give you enough time to get them before Christmas and the NYE run. Of course, there is always the unknown, so we'll try as hard as we can to get them to you. Make sure your correct address is updated in PayPal before you order.
