Trey Quotes in Rolling Stone

A few choice Trey quotes appeared in the June 10th edition of Rolling Stone. Of course, we all knew about the songwriting session with Tom months ago. My favorite quote is about his daughter... "When my daughter's friends are coming to see us, it makes me imagine what it'd be like to be 90 and doing this."

I think we can all imagine that, too, Trey.

Congrats!

Congratulations were in order for Twitter user @JedLuckless for being randomly selected as the winner of the Reba shirt giveaway...but I never heard from him after retweeting, emailing and Direct Messaging for an hour. Twitter moves pretty fast Jed. A surprise second drawing was also held for a set of three stickers, but @cogstweets also failed to respond. So after a second drawing @wav4rm is the winner of the Reba shirt! And the winner of the 3 pack of stickers is @ChinaKatSunflwr

Thanks to everyone who re-tweeted the message to enter. See you this summer!

Reba Shirt Twitter Giveaway!

It's that time again! Another Twitter based contest to pass the time between now and when Phish returns to the stage. The rules are simple, and the winner is picked at random. If you have won a shirt from Jiggs Lot this year, you are not eligible to win again. The giveaway is open to anyone in the US, as I'd rather not pay international shipping.

To have a chance to be picked, simply ReTweet the message below, without the quotes. The message must be an old school ReTweet, and not the ReTweet function in Twitter. The giveaway ends at 6pm EST today, and no tweets after that time will be considered. The winner may choose between a XL or L men's size, as those are the sizes I have set aside for the giveaway.

"RT @jiggslikesphish RT this for a chance to win a Reba Alliance shirt! Check out Jiggs Lot for cool lot shirts. http://tinyurl.com/3xo38vj"

Good luck!

Looking Out For Each Other

I have often found vending at shows to be a fun, rich experience different from just tailgating before the show. I have met some interesting people, and heard some great comments and stories. I have generally had a good time. One thing that seems to stand out to me is that vendors basically look out for each other. It could be correct change, duct tape, or even "here hold this for a minute", but the things exchanged or shared seemed to indicate there was a larger theme in play.

Online, however, things are a little different. You'll often find one vendor talking trash about someone else's product or other negative comments meant to downplay someone's wares. Anonymity is quite the elixir.

I would like to suggest a better approach. Keep walking. Unless someone is selling the exact same shirt or sticker as you, then competitiveness is not really a factor. There are more than enough cool ideas to go around. Some will do well, others will not. Why spend time and energy to hate, when it's just as easy to ignore them? If you don't like the kind of beer a vendor is selling, do you stand in front of their Easy Up and just yell obscenities at them? Much like shakedown, if you don't like it...keep walking. And if you are a fellow vendor, at least try to appreciate the logistics that got the product from a person's brain to the lot...or the internet.

What's One More Balloon On The Ground?

As we rapidly approach the beginning of Phish's 2010 summer tour many of us will begin to make last minute preparations. Some of us are planning our routes and trying to get last minute hotel rooms and camping spots. Others are making lists of supplies of things to bring along. As you tweak your summer tour plans, please consider, if you will, bringing along one extra item.

Trash bags.

It may sound like a very odd request, but it should be part of your cargo every time. Why? What's one more beer bottle? I mean...I put it at the corner of my parking spot. Isn't that enough? What's one more balloon on the ground? There are several others there...so what...someone will pick them up...right?

If that's your argument, then you have probably already stopped reading. We, as a fanbase, are more than just dirty hippies. I suggest we take a little pride in ourselves, and not just assume that the Green Crew will clean up after us. After you fish-out on the ground, put the balloon in your pocket. When you are done with your beer, stuff the Silo cups in the trash bags you brought. It is entirely possible to be somewhat responsible for yourself and cut loose at the same time.

And someone might just be inspired and ask you for a trash bag. That's why I bring an entire roll of them.

Media fire has asked me to remove these links. Sorry guys.

Update(5/10/10) - There were several corrupted file issues with the first mp3's I uploaded, so I stopped pushing the comp on people while I put new ones up. Hopefully these new versions are error free. It seems like the bad files stayed pretty standard, so I also uploaded a file of just the corrupted track replacements so everyone doesn't have to grab the whole thing again. These are Free, BOAF, Sneakin' Sally, Curtain With, Heavy Things, and Antelope. Let me know if you need something that's not in there.

The FLAC's are still being uploaded. I've resigned myself to them being done when they're done. They keep timing out, so it'll probably be a couple days yet. I've put up the printable artwork though, so if you want to make yourself a physical copy grab 5 regular thin double disc cases and print out this pdf (linked above) at actual size while waiting.
Update: 5-14-10: ChickenCrab is currently trying to get another set of files uploaded from a different location.  Thanks for all the kind comments on the disks downloadable so far. I will make a new blog post when the files are in place - Jiggs

UPDATE 5-19-10 - All individual MP3s were reloaded here.

They Do Want Us To Be Happy

It seems like everyone has a voice on the intertronz now, myself included. All these opinions flow down the river of thought that has become the Phish online community. Whether it’s a message board, a blog, or a twitter feed, there have always ideas and wishes about what the band should do, where they should go, and what they should play. In this humble blogger’s opinion, there’s nothing wrong with making a Christmas wish list and hoping Santa will be good to you this year. When those opinions wash together with a sense of entitlement…well, that’s when things begin to get a little fuzzy for me.

“Sucked the energy out of the room…” – This is sometimes over heard as “Awww, you blew it!” or “…ruined the set!” Whenever I read or hear this I genuinely laugh out loud. Such heady comments denote that the person knows what you like better than you do. So you don’t like Mist, or Joy, or whatever song you think affects the series of chemicals you have ingested that cause the set not to “rage”. So what.

“They need to shelve that song…” – Another gem I get a chuckle over. A lot of times I hear this comment when compared to an earlier tour. A quick glance at ZZYZX’s stat page will tell you that there were more songs played in 2009 than any other year up to this point. The perception that Phish needs to stop playing something because you are tired of it is laughable. I’d prefer 10 PYITE’s in a 15 night run than the depressing alternative of no more tours or albums.

“Such and such part of the country gets no love…” – I mostly hear this about shows out west. Up until 2009 I would tend to agree with that statement. I can relate to this one as it’s always nice not having to travel too far to see a set of shows. There is a lot to consider here. Scheduling/booking major venues, availability, logistics…I won’t pretend to know all the reasons, but there’s little doubt that these limited tours have to do with the band’s new family obligations.  I, for one, completely support this. Father’s Day at Alpine with my son was one of my favorite Phish experience’s ever.  I’m sure it would be great for them to do tours like 97 and 98 where every little town gets a little bit and they tour much larger areas, but to keep touring, the band’s schedule must evolve. Who are you to say Trey shouldn’t spend more time with his daughters?

If you have been a fan for a long time, it’s likely that touring and listening to this music has shaped your life in many ways. If you are even reading this, it’s likely that you have fell in love, postponed an important event, or moved your vacation time around because of the band. When decisions are made that limit the shows you can see, or the amount of Telas played in a given year, or the times you will see old friends again, it may be easy (too easy) to feel slighted in some way…as if the band doesn’t care about you. I see the exact opposite in the organization’s efforts in the last year. This is a band that wants to play for us. This is a band that wants to be together. This is a band that wants to keep surprising and wowing us. The evolution of setlists, playing style, tone, lighting equipment…it’s all part of adapting to the ‘new’, and that means you too.

They do want us to be happy. Every show I see is one more that I might not have been able to have. I will enjoy each and every one.

Dinner and a Movie

I tried very hard for the last 10 days or so not to watch any of the teaser videos Phish has released from Phish3D. Since 8 I have been listening to the recordings repeatedly, so I was pretty familiar with them (or so I thought). There's something about a visual element to the music that changes the way you listen to it. Maybe you notice things you have never noticed before. Maybe there are a couple of notes that aren't as bad as you thought. Things that may have sounded unintentional take on new meaning when you get to see them floating a few inches from your face. I wanted to see these things for the first time last night. I was not disappointed.

Once the correct amount of pizza and beer had been consumed, we made our way to the surprisingly empty theater. We were informed that the previous night was pretty wild. This included dancing in the aisles and taking clothing off. It all sounded pretty normal to me, but Saturday night was apparently a little more subdued. The theater ended up maybe 1/3 full, and the crowd that was there was fairly lively with a couple of "Maze!" shouts at the screen when the room went dark. Sooner or later, the glowsticks and balloons came out. I thought this element was pretty cool, as there were times you couldn't tell if the balloon was in the theater or on the screen. Leave it to Phish fans to add another D to the viewing experience.

The film itself worked beautifully in 3D. I had been hearing terrible things about Don Wilson's editing, but I really didn't have a problem with it. Instead of hard edged jump cuts, some of the jumps were subtle fades. I think the editing was great! The cuts created additional motion and excitement, whereas a straight-ahead video of just the stage would have fallen somewhat flat. I thought the timing and choices in when to add those awesome wide shots was very tastefully done. Some of the shots from the stage into the crowd when the flames were going in time to Mike's Song were just amazing. I would have liked to have seen a little more of the concert area, but in the end, the focus is on the band and the music.

The best part was being able to share it with our friends and our kids...and then being able to drive right home afterwards.
